Product Research: The Importance of Staying Informed

Posted on 2020-05-302020-06-11

The field of marketing is made upon many different aspects. It goes beyond simply taking a product and showing it to the public. There are nuances and strategies that need to be taken into consideration when approaching marketing for your product. And as our society has advanced, we have saturated the market with a slew of different products and marketing campaigns. Some are worldwide, such as coke-a-cola, others rely on small-town information and community. But there is one thing all these campaigns have in common that makes them successful. And that is research.

More specifically we are going to be looking at Product Research and how important it is to the field of marketing. Information is power. Without it, you are going to crash and burn. But why is product research so important and what aspects of it will you need to approach?

Product Information

The simplest aspect of product research is knowing what your product is. And this goes beyond simply being able to say what it is and does on a basic level, you need to know the in-depth intricacies and nuances of it. For example, if you are selling sporting gear or the like you would need to know how a mechanical workout machine works or how compression socks work. But why is it so important to know all this?

When you come around to creating and showing your marketing campaign you will want to make sure your marketing material is capturing the essence of your product. For example, if you are advertising a sensual product that will invigorate people, you don’t want a campaign that is displaying it as a family-friendly product and vise versa. You want your advertisements to let your customers know what sort of product they are getting. This is to stop them from being dissatisfied with the product and avoids them seeking to return the product after or leaving negative reviews.

You also need to be able to inform any customers who call up for more information. This will happen a lot with any marketing campaign. There are a lot of buyers who want to make sure they are fully informed before they make a purchase, and to that end you also have to be. And this leads us to our second point of product research.

Customer Information

This part is equally important to know before you start any marketing campaign. Without knowing your targeting audience you will be shooting in the dark. Your target audience is the demographic of people who are most likely to buy into your campaign and actively purchase your product. So how can you find out your target demographic and why should you.

Chances are your product won’t be entirely new. While it might be freshly invented, there will most likely be products or services that are similar enough to what you are providing that you can do research into who is using this product and apply that information to your own campaign. Another great tactic you can use is surveying. Hitting the streets and asking people what they think of your product and if they would use it is an invaluable asset in market research.

Marketing is as much an art as it is a business. It requires a lot of creativity, productivity, and insight, as with any art piece. You can’t just dive in headfirst without learning to swim. This is why research is so vital and staying informed is your bread and butter. The marketing landscape is constantly changing. Customer trends shift and move and people change their opinions on products regularly. So make sure you stay informed.
